Oct 11 works with what they told me at the Apple store: "We'll have them in-store in early to mid October."

It's good for my wallet that they didn't have a rack of them in-store on Thursday...

Just ordered my shuffle online and it says that the estimated ship date is October 31st and the estimated arrival date is November 7th:(

    ...I'm still excited though!

OH, I see what you're saying now. Yeah, the frame is always whiter than the glass, at least after a while, since they change colors after a while. My frame, front panel, home button, and back panel are all different shades of white. Were all the same when I first got them. I'm assuming that the real white i4 will be the same way.

I think he's saying the white point of the screen itself is not as white as the surrounding bezel. Which I"m sure is true. However, the same could be said about the black point compared to a black bezel.

Has anyone installed a Copy of Leopard on there Computer and how do you like it so far also how stable is it

Speaking from previous betas of 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3, I can tell you that it's not fun to run a beta of Mac OS X. Sometimes, it's lucky when most things work. With 10.2, I had terrible times keeping Finder going.

Besides, when you're developing a product to make sure it's compliant with a new operating system release, who has time to have fun? (Thankfully, Apple doesn't change major things as much these days.)

they have had crowd sourced apps that do this in the app store. they were useless. and i'm not going to send data to the crowd database while i'm driving with my kids in the car. illegal and dangerous

Yeah, reading the app description is a little frightening about people reporting accidents and whatnot. But it also uses data regarding location and traffic without manual user input. I might try it out, price is right.

Long time PPC user here on a budget looking to retire my G4 and buy a G5 on ebay. I am noticing a bit of a slow down on my trusty powermac G4.

    Specs...
    PowerMac G4 867 single
    1.25gb ram
    10.4.11/classic
2 fx cards for two old monitors

I was planning on running this thing until it died but it just won't die ;). I do notice a bit of a slow down while on the web and playing online java and flash games, iTunes taking longer to load and do anything. :apple: no longer supporting Tiger is getting to me. Plus the boot drive has only 10GB free so I can't really use iMovie anymore. I did everything I know to keep it up to speed; permissions, check to see if I'm paging (I rarely do), run scripts, and even opened it and cleaned out all the dust and cat hair. While I wouldn't call it a dog, I do think it's age is showing. I just ran geekbench and got a 502.

So I guess it's time to retire old faithful and jump on a G5. As never using one though I just had a few questions...

    1. Reliability - Been reading a few threads on here and while mostly positive I have seen some peeps say that the G5s are not near as reliable as the G4s. Overheating, power supply failures, and other things I just wanted to check before I head to ebay. Fan cooled vs liquid cooled, does it matter? Are there any PowerMac G5s models I should avoid?

    2. Fan noise - How loud are they compared to the mid-G4 powermacs? I am fine with the G4 noise and could even take something a little louder but I am in a usually quiet room though. Didn't want anything too loud.

    3. PowerMac vs iMac - While I am leaning towards the PowerMac as I already have two monitors, and the towers have more power, how do the iMacs hold up? Are they dogs compared to dual processor powermacs? I wouldn't mind going to a 20incher ( using 2 17" right now).

I was planning on erasing the G4 and slapping Tiger on the new G5 and bringing over classic for some apps I have still yet to upgrade (Quark 4, Freehand 9). Then one day down the road get Leopard and CS 1 or 2 and run the G5 for 2 or 3 years until it is dead or outdated.

Also I wouldn't mind bringing along my two old 40gb IDE drives, but I read I would need an adapter. What kind would I need and how much do they go for? And could I bring over either of my old FX cards? One is the original PCI ATI 32mb card and the other is a AGP Geforce 4 mx 32mb card.

I been watching ebay and found an average price of $200 - $230 + shipping for the following minimum specs...
    PowerMac G5 1.8 x2
    2gb ram
    80gb HD
FX card with a ADC port (main current monitor uses ADC)
Seller with a lot of positive feedback, usually a store, plus 30 day or more warranty

Seems good to me. Does that price seem about right?

Sorry for long post, but any advice is welcome

    n8

PS. I didn't see USA right at the top the chart at first. Maybe a big arrow to point it out. Anyway, how is Finland and Sweden etc healthier than Australia and Greece, do they not get more colds and flus than we in warmer countries?

Colds and flus are caused by bacterias and virii, not only by temperature. I'm used to -15 to -20 Celsius (0 Fahrenheit) in winter but I don't even have a cold every winter. Besides, there is good public healthcare in those countries. Food is also cheap (compared to income level) in Finland and Sweden, and that includes healthy food.

Memory DIMMs come in different latencies at the same clock rate - often called "CL".

A quick check of Newegg showed CL9 to be the overwhelming rating of SO-DIMM DDR3 modules, with a few at the faster CL7. (CL9 has a latency of 9 cycles, CL7 has a latency of 7 cycles.)

For standard 240 pin DDR3 DIMMs, CL9 was the most common, but lots of CL8 and CL7 DIMMs were listed.

    It's a standard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MXM
I remember looking for tight/low CL timings. Now those timings are loose/high. Works wonders for OC'ing RAM...

Yes... The "Newton" will rise again damit!

If Apple were to release a new Newton I would buy in a second, the Newton was fanastic even though it was made a little before it's time.

I wouldn't be surprised if we seen a Newton-ish thing from Apple in the next few months.

Id like to back CoffeeDrinker here. Referencing software a specialized software packages. Most of them will meet a long list of requirement, including (1) access and download of citation data and original documents to a dozen or sometimes more than a hundred paid or free databases, (2) managing large sets of references, often including the PDF of the original, in a meaningful way, and (3) create citations and lists of references in new texts, according to one of dozen (sometimes >100) formats prescribed by journals. This is all complicated because scientific disciplines are very different in terms of ways to cite (often for good reasons): medical researchers quite different form historians, and economics quote different from electrical engineers. With this complexity and with the widely diverging user needs, it would not make sense to me to have this all integrated into an office suite like Office.

While Endnote is certainly among the best known, there is a wide range of such programs, ranging in focus, functionality, and price (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_software).

Id like to highlight Bookends, a Mac-specific program that is very reasonably priced and has served me and many other enthusiasts for already quite a while. Its developers offer great support and regularly implement needs expressed by their users. For students and other users that are on a tighter budget, Zotero offers a good open-source alternative.

    All the best, Rudi

My point exactly. Square institutions like Princeton and Yale are well known for, well, being square. It's no surprise a distinct minority of students there are Mac users (even if some of the rest are switcheurs). Take a walk around an Ivy League school with a student population in command of a more comprehensive understanding of aesthetics--Harvard, Brown, or especially Columbia with its boho-beat appeal--and you can't help but notice the difference. Students at these schools, unlike those at Princeton, are natural-born Mac users.

That, in short, is why it's wrong to paint all Ivy Leaguers with the same broad brush. You're not a bigot, are you?

I'm surprised you had so much time to attend every Ivy university in your 4 years as an undergrad, that's impressive. I guess you also know the ins and outs of every club, group, team, dorm, and department at Princeton as well. That really is impressive, I didn't get close to that in my 4 years there in engineering.

Having attended an institution that is so impressive (harvard, columbia??), as you undoubtably have, you should have been able to pick up on the fact that the 45% was not the university wide "market share" of Apple. It only refers to this years sales by OIT. Sure that's been on the rise, but many students purchase computers outside of OIT, as they prefer more custimization. OIT is a great part of the University btw, and they are very platform nuetral (I worked there for 2-3 years).

Anyways, I hope "mac users" such as yourself are on the decline. I'd prefer to see stuck up, snotty, bigoted, prejudice @$$holes such as yourself be drowned out by the masses of "Switcheurs" as you call them. At least they enjoy their macs instead of putting down people for their choice of University or their lack of "purity" as a mac user.

I have to agree with "Hardtimes" here. It's a great feature to have, and some people will do a lot with it. But I'm of the opinion that when it comes to digital music, the content isn't really that big in the first place. (Your typical MP3 file recorded in a good bitrate may be what? 4-7MB in size?) You can cram 16GB worth of content on a tiny microSD flash card that costs under $40, or far more on relatively cheap standard SDHC flash cards or USB memory sticks. If you're willing to carry around a small portable hard drive, you might have as much as 1TB of content on a notebook type drive in a small, thin case, and it's still self-powered off the USB cable.

There's no shortage of inexpensive and reliable ways to take a *lot* of music with you digitally, and no shortage of devices that can play it. What *can* get really costly is lots of high-speed Internet access. You have issues ranging from cellular providers with monthly caps on your data xfers on their networks to wi-fi hotspots that charge fees to use them, to larger caps on your home broadband connections (which while larger, also get used up a lot faster by things like streaming VIDEO you'd be likely to use a lot at home). Not only that, but I hate listening to music only to hear interruptions in the playback. Streaming audio often suffers from that if you lose your wireless connection, even for a moment. Kind of brings you back to the bad old days of vinyl records that skipped due to scratches, or music CDs with fingerprints on them that skipped until you cleaned them!

I am honestly not fussed about this.

I would much rather have a physical apple branded itunes server for my house to fit in with my personal eco-system. I just cannot see myself using this - especially with the inevitable restrictions that will come with music I have ripped from my purchased CD's.

No, nobody refers to network traffic in that way as it comes to development, projects and jobs.

They are talking about actually road traffic with cars and buses.

    Exactly, especially considering this wording:
"...the goal of providing iPhone users an improved traffic service..."

As you say this is not how one would go about referring to network traffic, but rather real world road traffic, but don't point this out to those who think everybody (including MR) are idiots, because we see the story as having to do with turn-by-turn gps directions.

According to Korean site ETNews.co.kr (http://www.etnews.co.kr/news/detail.html?id=201103310029&mc=m_901_00005), Apple is planning on releasing the iPhone 5 during the 4th week of June. Multiple reports have already revealed (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/28/no-hardware-announcements-at-wwdc-2011/)

I reckon that this is when the white iPhone 4 will be released with very slight upgrades, and also the black will have the same updates. Still ios 4 and the same design, just some glitches improved. Just to tide people over until the end of fall/2012 for the all new iPhone 5.

I could be completely wrong - but thats just what I think will happen!

    This is getting exciting.

The billion dollar question: just content purchased from iTunes or all compatible (audio) files in one's iTunes library?

It wouldn't make sense to only allow purchased content. Why would Apple build that huge data center just to have their customers create copies of content that is already on the iTS servers? If it was only purchased content, it would only be a simple policy change to "Unlimited downloads of purchased iTS content"
