I never thought of myself as an iMac type of guy. More of a MBP for work, Mac Pro for home.

Apples hardware release of late have been catching my eye also. Unfortunately the last Mac I owned was a Mac Plus, but Apple has become much more competitive of late.

But the 24" iMac is shaping up to be a great computer. 750 gig drive is sweet, 3 gigs of memory, huge display, and fast.

Yep and with things like Santa Rosa and hopefully continued success with low power processors from Intel I see a long future for the machine. It is a platform that was pretty much dead ended with the lack of the right PPC processors.

I always hated the wires and general visual mess of the normal desktop. Even in the age of bluetooth, there are too many wires.

I don't every see that going completely away. What I do see is far fewer of those wires and more and more hardware sitting on network connections. From what I can see Apple thinks the same way.

I think the 24" iMac is shaping up to be a great prosumer computer. I'm seriously considering purchasing one now.

A very nice machine though to be honest with you, unless this is a Christmas present, I wouldn't bother with a desktop until after new years. Or until after the industry shakes out all of its upgrades and new products.

    Dave

yeah whats the real difference between magnesium and aluminum?

Strenght to weight ratio. magnesium is stronger for it's weight. It is also more expensive put even if the stuff goes up to $100 per pound it taks so little magnesium to make an iPod cost of the metal would matter little. It might even be cheaper pound for pound than the plastic they use now.

magnesium will burn in air and the fire is very hard to put out. It will even continue to burn if you toss it into a bucket of water. But the fire is hard to start you would need to leave it exposed a flame from a gas stove or tortch for some time, a match or lighter would not do it. I would assume the plastic nano would burn too if exposed to a blow tortch.

It is actually pretty hard to start a big chunk of magnesium burnning. The metal conducts heat so well that as you put the flame to one end the heat conducts to the other end and radiates away into the air. The stuff that does burn are the "chips" on a machine shop floor. And of course the magnesium powder they use in fireworks. But they will not make iPods with small flakes of metal

I'll be at MWSF all week. Where are people meeting?

Don't think we've decided yet. IJ suggested the seating area of the South Hall and I'm inclined to trust him since he's planned stuff like this before but nothing definite as of now.

This is one area where a booth may be helpful. Hint hint... ;)

I'm down for afternoon scheduling/meetups since I can work in the mornings that week if I can be arsed to get up early.

    Again... this is advertising. ;)

I imagine they bought the cheapest iPad for this. $500 is nothing to pay in exchange for the advertising benefits they'll receive from a video such as this. If it results even in a handful of people buying their product they've turned that purchase into profit. Also, Apple profited from the sale (and also from the appearance of their product).

    This is the economy functioning...

Ah yes, someone who understands. +1

    What does this mean?

Do you honestly foresee a war so catastrophic that it would wipe out the world's largest trading partner, 5% of the population, and the second oldest written Constitution?

If America has been stubborn enough to survive a civil war continuous social conflict, and the metric system, it isn't going anywhere.

    Ah...the metric system. Such a nightmare. :D

I think eventually more and more "American stuff" will use the metric system. At this point on most "large objects" it doesn't really make that much difference. And the "pros" trained in this stuff can use both. In the small scales even Americans use the metric system. Especially when more nanotech products start hitting the markets, ppl will get use to the metric system. I mean, look at the iPod nano! :p

I think this law is a Good Thing. It's obvious that a certain subset of Muslims are going to have to dragged into the modern age and it's gotta start somewhere.

Why should anybody be "dragged into the modern age" simply over how they dress?

    Don't you value personal freedom?

    you don't want -advmethods.

that's the problem i think. try it without -advmethods, and you should see a huge gain

edit: well i'm not sure. i don't think what you did is the same as -advmethods, but i am not sure. you do have core_15, which is what you want.

you are getting 14k ppd with that card?

14k it is finishing a wu every hour so 24 x about 611 points per wu = 14,664 I think it would do better if I didn't have a -bigadv unit running all 12 cores of the cpu but dropping a core to give to the gpu would slow down the bigadv unit which by the way is keeping up with my mac pro at about 34 min per frame.

erg not really. you do only have 2 holes in your head as you say, but your hearing is more advanced than that. your brain always factors in all the other elements, like your head position, so your brain notices and calculates the volumes of incoming sounds, so you can distinguish where things are in relation to you. obviously, your brain can't do that with headphones.
No reproduction system is perfect in all environments. When your brain translates a sound, it positions it relative to your head-- a sound in front of you will sound like it's coming from the right if your head is turned left. This is why you tend to look at something before you can react to it. If you have more time to react, your brain will probably work it out correctly.

As you say, headphones alone can't track head movement so the environment will appear to rotate with your head. If you're trying to simulate a fixed environment, or coordinate with an immersive display, then you'll need to deal with this somehow. They have the advantage, however, of being able to collapse the combined impact of a sound field into two point sources directly at the sensors (your ear canals).

Headphones have the additional complication that we position sound vertically by the filter effect of the fleshy parts of our ears-- which are different for every individual. Most systems use a generalized filter to approximate an average ear, whatever that means.

Open air speakers are trying to reproduce a sound field from a small number of point sources and can only produce the desired effect on one location in space, and the listener has to remain there. They also suffer from channel cross talk and reflections from walls and objects in the reproduction sound space that aren't intended to be in the simulated sound space. The Dolby home theater type systems are essentially two dimensional in the plain of the ceiling and floor, which causes problems if you're trying to get 3D sound, or sound indicating the vertical alignment of a computer display.

For positioning screen effects, headphones will probably win since they don't have to compensate for the environment and the user is almost certainly looking at the display fixed in front of them. Since the simulation environment is essentially two dimensional (the display), you might also get away with fixed speakers positioned around the display and ignore the cross talk and reflections. In either case, you'd also have to assume a distance from the display to the user and assume the user is centered.

Nothing simple is going to work in all cases...

To instantly proclaim that it is "better" or "faster" without having used the product seems premature.

Premature maybe. But I have an 8 core with 12 gigs of RAM (a poster child system spec for FCP currently not being able to take advantage of it) and I'm guessing:

    12 gigs of RAM + 8 cores + GPU optimization > 4 gigs of RAM + 1.5 cores.

It might be a premature guess, but it's as safe a prediction as any I've ever made. ^_^

I would just like to report that I received iPad #4 last night - no problems, looks beautiful and zero light leakage, also passed the dead or stuck pixel test so I'm very happy. Genius bar and the people at local Apple store were extremely helpful even adding "if you still have any problems in a couple months just bring it back and we'll exchange at that time"

I didn't wait in any lines whatsoever, iPad was ordered online right when they went on sale so I received shipment fairly quickly with iPad #1. It was just good customer service by the "Genius" working for me.

That's good to hear -- sorry for my assumptions. I think I was just a bit too worn from everybody swearing up and down that their iPhone 4 was dropping calls more than their other smart phones that I couldn't help but think "here we go again" when this light leakage thing started coming out. Honestly, some of those light leakage photos in the thread are no worse (and often better) than many LCD monitors I have owned. Some of them are pretty darn bad though. I'm glad to hear that Apple took care of it. Again, my apologies.

On the bright side... just think you have owned 4 iPad 2's in a time period that most folks have yet to get one. :)

twoodcc may I ask if any of your setups have gone down?

Output of the team has gone down lately :(

My 24 hour average dropped in half but I'm back running. Next week or two will be off/on for me as I've been moving my stuff but once I finish my bathroom I'll be moved into my house and will be folding away non stop. I'm up to around 90-100k right now so hopefully that'll jump start things some more.

Steve should stop responding to customers/media in his email. He's digging himself a hole with all these 1 sentence responses. He's obviously not good with PR and it's really going to bite him in the ass one day.
Already did when they lied that response as not his.

I dont know what is going on...but i preordered my Iphone4 on the 15th and received a confirmation email and so on and so forth saying it would be delivered on the 24th. They charged my credit card for the phone and now today I noticed the hold they put on my credit card is gone. Also, when I log on to see the status of the phone....it says BACKORDERED!!!. How can this be, I received the email confirming, I logged on pretty early in the morning to reserve it, and they charged my credit card but then took it back????? I called ATT and they said I should receive it on the 24th as planned, but I have other friends who ordered the phone AFTER I did who already have confirmation emails saying it has been sent. WTF is going on here lol.

I just heard from USA TODAY that best buy store are getting 0-5 units. Obviously it depends on where you are--and this is probably bad journalism as it's not accurate, but take it as you will.

My fianc and I are numbers 8 and 9 at best buy. Still no call from them. We are going in at 10am (when they open) to wait and see what's going on.

Where are those holy souls who claimed that Android was finished when iPhone launched on Verizon. I still see a 7% growth for Android compared to a negligible 0.02% for iPhone. According to a survey, the Thunderbolt is selling more than the iPhone at most of Verizon stores nationwide. :D

First the iPad is coming out with 2 revisions in then only one revision, then the iPhone5 is not coming out in June 2011 but in September then it is coming out again in June and then it is not coming out at all in 2011. Tell you what, I will believe it when I see it.

Exactly. Until Apple says it, it is all rumor. Maybe some are better guesses than others, but they are still guesses. Perhaps at one point they were partly true (like Apple doing prototypes of ipod touches with cameras way before they released them) but things change. THIS is why Apple doesn't talk about their ideas. They only talk when someone is a done deal, tested and ready to release.

In regards to the rumors, I don't see Apple shifting too far off their current pattern of one major release in each of Q2, Q3 and Q4 (Q1 is covered by holiday sales). That way they have high sales to help bolster their earnings reports and thus their stock values. Once the value drops it is harder to recover than just keeping it more or less high all the time.

Now is it possible that they would shift what falls in each quarter, perhaps or perhaps not.

Right now the carriers aren't really ready with LTE and the vendors aren't ready with NFC and these are the two big possibles for new iphone hardware. They are apparently already shipping the iphone 4 with a dual chip so that wouldn't really be an 'iphone 5' issue. So might they skip the baby steps of an iphone 4s and not do hardware. Sure they might. and then perhaps release the next iphone in Spring 2010 as their Q2 and shift the ipad to Q3, perhaps even including it in the whole Back to School promo to help push it into the school setting.

The talk supporting an ipad 3 in the fall could be a mis read on orders by Apple for parts to test possible set ups for next years ipad 3. Nothing more or less.

exactly. this analyst doesnt know what he's saying. Apple would never off a competing service in a hardware product if they planned to compete against it.

    this story is bunk

I think I agree for other reasons but you aren't correct... iBooks was offered day 1 on the iPad. SO WAS Kindle for iPad.

In Stockholm and Frankfurt, I hardly see any iPhones. Also, I hardly see any iPads. I do however see a ton of MacBookPros but almost no MacBookAirs.

I find both places very style-centric (Stockholm especially), but also somewhat frugal. I don't think that iPhone will reach as large of a market share in Europe due to the high upfront cost of an iPhone (659€/799€ for 16GB/32GB).

Actually, it's running joke that you can identify an American by iPhone/iPad (aside from the loud inane conversation).
