Exactly. Apple says they will pay 70% to the music companies. They worked out their deals with them at that rate. If another company wants to sell music, they by no means have to get the same deal as every other company selling music. Its just nuts to think that way.

Yep. And they agreed to let the labels decide the price in exchange for the whole no DRM thing. Plus at the time they didn't apparently think to put that whole "same or better" rule in the mix.

so basically Apple gets what they deserve on this one. But I suspect they will weather the storm. THeir money is in hardware anyway

I've reinstalled OS X twice in the last 9 months. The latest being about 3 weeks ago when I upgraded to a 160GB hard drive. There is nothing wrong with my computer. (OK there is something wrong with its sleeping mech but that has nothing to do with performance.)
Parallels just sucks. Also Im willing to bet the more you use the disk image and Windows the more parallels slows down. Ive got a 14GB disk image, a ton of apps loaded, along with being in it every day for 8+ hours, USB peripherals all over the place, network settings for home and work, firewall enabled along with antivirus software. (I cant use Office 2003 with SAP in OS X.) I probably use it more extensively then most Mac users. The simple fact is the reason why I keep reinstalling the demo instead of outright buying it is because Im waiting on VMWares solution. VMWare is THE industrys Microsoft when it comes to virtualizing. Just without the whole evilness thing. Ive used Parallels extensively. Im not impressed.

Guess I wasn't alone when I thought Parallels is slow.

Anyone find it odd that the only 3.1Ghz Quad-Core i5 listed on intel's website is a Embedded Intel Core™ i5-2400 Processor (6M Cache, 3.10 GHz) Unless they released the 27" with a brand new i5?

I wouldnt put too much into this story. If its being delayed its because they need to put out the verizon and att at the same time. Probably dont want to put it out THIS fast because the Verizon phone JUST came out.

    This is a smart move.

...current generation of LTE chips forced design compromises that the company has been unwilling to make.
Translation: Apple's new iPhone, code named Anorexia, couldn't possibly hold 2 chips! We aim to make a phone so thin, a postage stamp would add bulk.

How can you possibly make that statement - that no one is switching to Zune ( or will switch to )

    Zune isn't out yet!!!

There is no incentive to go to a Zune. Same DRM, same features. The people who hate the iPod and buy Creative aren't switching to Zune. They don't want to be locked into DRM. So unless microsoft really does something innovative it is just another player in a sea of non-iPods.

EDIT: I mean same DRM in the sense that the download are locked by DRM, not exactly the same type.

Of course they'll charge for it. This kind of stuff will pile up fast. No free lunch. On the upside, there's increased level of accountability and service. Apple will be accountable to your dollar.

I should add that this is the one reason I'm interested in VMWare - native disk speed. I can partition my disk to XP and Mac ala Bootcamp and have VMWare use the partition natively for disk access.

As first noted in a HardMac forum post (http://forum.hardmac.com/index.php?showtopic=159&st=0&p=917&#entry917), it appears Microsoft is specifying in its license agreements that the ability to operate in a virtualized environment is prohibited in Home Basic and Home Premium editions, leaving users to have to purchase either the Business or the Ultimate versions of the software to legally run in a virtualized environment.

Mac users have found virtualization solutions such as Parallels Desktop a good way to switch between Mac OS X and Windows. This latest news from Microsoft may inhibit some use of the software as Business and Ultimate editions range from $300-400 verses Home Basic's $200 price point (prices (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060829093154.shtml)).

Microsoft's EULA agreements can be found here (http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/useterms/default.aspx).

    Where are these figures?

    Aaaand in 3 ... 2 ... 1:

    REALITY CHECK.

This is why I posted my comment correcting your innaccurate assumption that "the iPod is still Apple's cash cow".

The funny part is that I was in no way "defending" the iPod, since I don't have one at the moment and was just as annoyed at Apple as everyone else that Macs were not centerstage... in '04 and '05.

We're rounding out '06 and that argument hasn't held water since last year.

It's been ALL about Mac in '06

I'm sorry but I forgot to add that Moyank24 died in the last story.

Well, that's a bummer. Now I'm stuck with Appleguy in the afterlife ;)

Hopefully their scan is much more clean. Good luck.

Couldn't agree more. Good luck and take care of yourself.

Hi all, second post in the photog section, so excited to finally start getting into photography, I've wanted a DSLR for ages.

All C&C is so greatly appreciated.

No post edit, I'm waiting for adobe to release the raw updates, which hopefully are coming soon.

    1) Not really. The current quarter beat expectations. The worry is about the coming quarter.
    2) iPod sales are not dropping. Unit growth rate was lower.
    3) MacWorld announcements really don't matter.
    4) Define spectacular.
    5) Lower than who expected?
    6) The China market issue is unresolved.
    7) iTunes is not a major profit center for Apple.
    8) Possibly, but see above.
    9) Possibly, but see above. And this is also old news, which did not hurt the share price when it came out.
    10) Apple's margins were way up in the quarter.
    11) This is true.

Bottom line: It's not always possible to rationally explain why the market does what it does on a short-term basis.
