When I "geotagged" all of my photos last year, I couldn't find an automatic way to do this within Aperture. I'm sure that there are a few perl (or similar) solutions out there but that would (likely) require a re-import. That was a deal breaker for me so I just went through them manually. It wasn't that difficult. I got through roughly 20,000 photos in just a few hours.

I created a Smart Album for all of my "Untagged" images. I keep it around for maintenance of my geotags now. There is also an Album called "Unknown Locations" in my "GPS Albums" folder. Any image that I don't know the origin of goes into this folder (this keeps it out of my "Untagged" Smart Album). When I was going through in mass, I just kept my "Untagged" album sorted by date and hit them top to bottom using the Places view. Most of my images could be tagged 30, 40 or even 100+ at a time.

I was getting the oil changed in my car and was in the customer lounge when the first plane hit - and stayed to see the second one hit. I then left for work and got in an argument with my boss, who saw no reason to cancel an architecture meeting we had planned.

The meeting was cancelled - the room was being used by employees to watch CNN.

According to what I remember and the sites I saw, to get Roman Numerals higher than Thousands(M), you would need to put a bar over the numerals, which effectively multiplies the numeral by 1000.

Yup.. and bars to the left and right as well, which left me unsatisfied..

I think you mean translucent :p

Your right. I was more thinking about the process in making it translucent.

For some reason a translucent image is made by changing its "opacity"... I dunno why they don't call it "translucency" lol.

My first-gen :apple:TV streams Apple Lossless 24-bit 96kHz files from iTunes through the digital port to my Harmon Kardon amplifier just fine. The HK would recognize them as 96kHz too (but didn't display the number of bits it was receiving). It sounds GREAT!

Alternatively, you could create a third partition on your laptop and format it as FAT32 or exFAT and keep all of your data on there so both Windows and Mac and read & write the files.

Hmm, FAT32 only allows for 4GB, right? Anyway, can you please tell me how this can be achieved? Links would be appreciated :)

I haven't found anything that works well for Windows. I would recommend that you give MacDrive a try or look a Paragon. Both are well maintained and if there is an issue have tools to help you repair the partition.

I see, but like i said, MacDrive is paid.. So is Paragon.. i need a free version, if you know of any. thanks :D

Side note: Did you know that NTFS Mounter works perfectly for and quietly for writing NTFS from HFS?

    Cheers :)

The world has mostly caught on to Steve Wozniak's vision of having a computer in every home.

Ahem... Everybody likes Woz, but "one computer in every home" has ALWAYS been Microsoft's vision, not Wozniak's.

Besides, what does anybody expect Wozniak to say what his most favorite computer is? An Apple //e? A Dell XPS? A Lenovo Thinkpad? As a founder, employee and shareholder of Apple, of course he has to pick one of their own products, even if he might prefer a self-built Hackintosh over one of Apple's closed boxes. Remember? This guy invented the PC with EXPANSION SLOTS. If you find somebody at Apple who hates closed systems and walled gardens, it will be Steve Wozniak.

Mine in the only 5ghz network

you are aware that the 5 GHz signal deteriorates over distance, though ? in a dual-band environment, wireless clients tend to connect to the strongest available signal which, given the right conditions, more often than not is the 2.4 GHz band, which is prone to interference.

also, there may be closed (hidden) networks nearby that tools such as iStumbler (http://www.istumbler.net/) won't pick up.

you might want to experiment with the radio channel your TC is broadcasting on - you may find a channel that will work better for your network.

finally, there are other sources of interference (see the article i provided the link for) that you may not be able to overcome (power lines, electrical railroad tracks, and power stations for instance).

in the end, the only reliable form of networking is a physical ethernet connection, however, i'm using powerline adapters quite successfully in my network.

    good luck !

On the topic of photo storage and editing, I ran across this blog post in an app on my iPad called Photoverse. It details how to use star ratings to thin out a shoot without dumping any photos.

Chase Jarvis Photo Editing 101 (http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2011/03/photo-editing-101/)

    Dale

Thanks for sharing this app Dale! I have a lot of research to do! :)

ok 100Teraflops I use a Mac Pro daily for Music and Photography, The Mac Pro is a good beastie but alone it cant do the job, it must be paired up to a good Monitor, IPS panel if possible, I did use apple's but found the Dell's re-produced colour better. When you purchase your DSLR will you shoot RAW or Jpeg, think about it, RAW may be bigger files, but you can keep producing a good quality image from just 1 RAW file, On the subject of a scratch disk try and dedicate a complete disk as scratch.
my MP is set up as follows,
    bay 1 :500gb for OS & apps
bay 2 :320gb as Scratch Disk
    bays 3 & 4 : both have 1tb hdd's in a raid 1 configuration for music and stuff
All my RAW files & Aperture library are on a WD my book studio 4TB edition in a raid 1 via fw800 giving me 2TB to use, The system is simple and it works well. the big hdd's are all green WD drives. Hdd's are cheap now, but get the biggest you can afford (don't buy at the apple store), I find using Raid 1 I spend less time now backing up. The hardest part of photography is deleting images, you may take 100 shots and find only 2 of them are keepers, but getting rid of blurry, out of focus files will free up a lot of space,
you have had some excellent advice on here so far, and it will be nice to hear how you finally set up your workflow, keep us posted :)

Thanks for recommending the specs of a quality monitor. Your Mac Pro HDD configuration is simple and easy to understand. Are you using striping from OS X or did you set you RAID 1 with only two drives? I agree that it is very hard deleting photos, as I do not delete photos after I take them. I wait a few days or longer, and then decide if they are keepers. However, I take photos of my family etc and occasionally automobiles and landscape. Also, you are right that I have received excellent advice from the forum members. You folks rule! :)

I will keep you all posted. I am thinking that I should buy a Mac Pro soon! From what I have read on this forum, a new Mac Pro is not expected until 4Q 2011 or 2012. I do not want to wait that long for a stupid processor chipset. :D A few months is optimal, but 6-8 is not feasible. Thanks again for sharing knowledge and swapping ideas!

I would really love to see the numbers on that boondogle.
They got their value out of Connectix in Virtual Server. Like it or not the Mac stuff was just the tip of the iceberg.

After reading the Wiki article I linked to I am also not sure how much of Connectix was bought by MS.

Hi, firstly sorry i have posted this in the wrong section.
Anyway I want to buy an external hard-drive for my macbook, and i was just wondering if i need to get a specific type for mac. I would like to use it with time machine but is it also possible to use it for my windows 7 partition too? Any suggestions to which external hard drive i should get? preferably cheap as im a student but 500gb + . Thankyou in advance :)
Any external hard drive will work with PCs or Macs, as long as the connectors are there (Firewire, USB, etc.) It doesn't matter how the drive is formatted out of the box, since you can re-format any way you like. Yes, you can partition and format the drive with Disk Utility, to accommodate both a Windows 7 partition and a HFS+ partition.

    NTFS (Windows NT File System)

    Hello there!

I set up a mac mini server for my little company a few months ago and I find it to be overkill for the simple tasks I use it for. Originally I planned to setup a web hosting service, an email server and a wiki but our needs didn't grow as I expected and we found simpler alternatives.

Anyway, I am now thinking about selling it but I was wondering if it was simple to transfer the Mac OS X Server license. I can't seem to find info online on how to do this and I don't want to sell a product which won't easily be usable.

    Any tips on doing this?

    Thanks!

If a word processor can even be dumbed down, it's been poorly designed... Pages is my wp of choice now for just about everything. I find Word too noisy-- I have never used more than half the functions in Word (even after putting in a good effort to "learn to use them effectively").

I agree with the crowd that thinks compatibility is important. There's two levels of compatibility though-- functional and superficial. If they can make it functionally compatible with a reasonable subset of Excel functions, then it will be enough for me to use and share files.

There are times though when superficial compatibility is critical-- where it needs to print and format on another machine just the way you wrote it. I run into this problem with Keynote-- I can export something to Powerpoint to use as a starting point for cleanup, but it's rarely presentable straight from export.
right on ms word gives me a headache. i go from pages to word for phys class and it takes me longer to do it in word. iwork is good but it could be better. numbers will be welcomed addition, now i don't have to use excel

Changing the order of the networks so that the private network is first in System Preferences should be enough. I used to have a similar setup, and I'm pretty sure that's all I did.

OTS is here 24 hours too, but I ordered the i7 with HD6970m 2GB so it ads 3 days. Ordered Tuesday and I just got a message from Apple it's been shipped :D, that's 2 days! However, estimate arrival went to May 11th instead of May 9th :(, but I should be glad to get a custom one so quick.

Part One rumors consisted of the PowerMac and G5 combination, Part Two concerns the iMac, eMac, and laptops.

Since the general concensus is that Altivec (in some form or another) is coming to IBM processors in a lite version of the Power4, but what stops IBM from putting these vector instructions into the 750FX--IBMs flagship PowerPC processor at the moment.

An enhanced version of the 750FX, or 750FXe (as I've already posted one time before) would be a great fit for the iBook, the PowerBook, the iMac, the eMac, and maybe even the classic iMac--if they do not discontinue it.

So, here are prospects for use of the 750FXe:

    iMac:
    - 1GHz G4
    - 166MHz system bus
    - PC2700 DDR memory

    eMac:
    - 1GHz G4
    - 133MHz system bus
    - PC2100 DDR memory

    iBook
    - 800MHz G4
    - 133Mhz system bus
    - PC2100 DDR memory

    PowerBook
    - 1GHz G4
    - 166MHz system bus
    - PC2700 DDR memory

But, here's the great part of this entire thing. All of these computers would use the same exact processor, with the iBook receiving an underclocked 1GHz 750FXe. This helps Apple buy in bulk and thus lower the price of their purchases, which could lead to more inexpensive eMacs, etc. The other fact, is that the use of DDR across the board also means cheaper memory (or at least from Apple's standpoint, they'll probably still charge us an arm and a leg).

One a note on the DDR memory, the 750FX fully supports DDR memory, so the 750FXe would likely do the same. Some might question the use of crippled DDR in the PowerMacs and a full implementation of DDR memory in the consumer and laptop products, but a better PowerMac using the 7470 G4 from Motorola or a G5 from IBM is likely on its way soon.

Nope. You can add up to 10 per page (at least on my iPhone, I wonder if it's more on my iPad). Regardless, it just starts squishing them all together. This is where having Shrink really starts to help.

Up to 16 on my ipad with infinidock but that's a little to tight for my liking:D

Muscelnerd tweeted that all iPad 2 jailbreaks would have to be userland. Im glad comex found an exploit...and especially this fast.

He meant it'll have to be user land for awhile till they can scan the new boot rom for exploits. Because it's much quicker and easier to find a user land exploit then a boot rom exploit.
