Back on topic, I hope that Microsoft listens to their users and lets everyone who want to download the beta and give their feedback. It seems to have worked well for W7.

Great news. Glad to see Apple taking a leaf out of their own guidelines... A touch OS has a different interface for a reason.

That being said, Apple would do fine on software sales. Especially if they significantly upped their software sales. At least 1 OEM has said they would love to ditch Windows at the first sight of a capable OS. OS X is that OS. All Apple would have to do is shift from a primarily hardware company to an iPod/hardware and software co.
If Apple were to follow Microsoft's lead on a similar problem, virtualization installations of Vista, Apple would simply charge $150-200 EXTRA for OSX on Commodity PCs.
The backlash to Microsoft has been notable and you cannot even widely buy the software yet. I wonder how it would impact the relatively untarnished image of Apple?

Must be alot coming out today, if the store is down 1hr and 15min before the actual event.
Oooh, ya the whole Apple store is down now... so ~5 hours before the event iTMS goes down, and 1+ hour before the web store goes down. Doesn't the store usually only go down right before an event? Like for WWDC it went down maybe 15 minutes ahead of the keynote, or at least that's how I remember it.
Seems like maybe we'll get more than iPods... maybe a new line of media systems (like my predicted Mac mini Media Edition)?
Exciting stuff! Glad it doesn't start 'till after I get back from lunch! ;)
EIT: Odd that the store sign says we'll be back within the hour when the event doesn't even start for an hour... I assume its just a standard template page, but how hard would it have been to change the text to say 'in a couple of hours', or at 2pm EST, or even 'as soon as possible!'?

Essentially, the FairPlay system is one that implies a certain amount of trust. Once you authorize a machine all of the purchased tracks from that account on the machines can be decrypted. Even if they are not on the machine at the time of the authorization and the machine is not on the network at the time (I have played back encrypted videos on DVD-R on my iBook while it was not on the 'net.)
I'm pretty sure that that's not how FairPlay works. I think it goes something like this...
When iTunes tries to play a protected media file, it asks for an ID of the device that it is trying to play on (serial number, or something like that). Each media file contains a list of devices for which it has been authorised. If the current device is not in this list, iTunes offers the possibility to add the device to the list of devices authorised for this media file. well i'm not totally sure yet, but it looks like one of my systems is down already! i'll have a better idea later tonight though. i might look into having a remote login system, so i'd know sooner if something is wrong.

Yes I'm well aware of China Mobile's vast GSM Edge network. But this is a 3g phone. So that 558 Million actually doesn't count given that it would be like giving the phone to T-Mobile knowing that they can't support 3g. And Apple doesn't pull moves like that since it would open them up for lawsuits (if someone unlocks on their own, that's on them).
The real numbers to look at are 152 Million valid GSM 3g subscribers against 178 Million CDMA customers. And no contract prohibiting having a phone for both. So again, if this is about making money, why didn't they make a CDMA phone for that second group. Assuming they are open to having a CDMA iphone at all.
I don't think China has much interest in the iPhone.

A few people have mentioned webcasts and things streamed to London. I live in the UK, can anyone clear things up, am I going to be able to watch the event on the net live (if so, where), or will I just have to make sense of the text scrolling up the screen on this site?

Why is Apple the only tech company that makes unique products? All the other big ones seem to just drop in behind Apple after they invent something... Examples:
•Phones that are designed to simply compete with the iPhone.
•Pretty much every non-Apple tablet.
•iMac lookalikes.
•I've even seem some unibody copy cats...
Why don't they try and come up with something of their own instead of trying to "make a better Apple product"? Its annoying... :mad:

Up here in the Nordic countries we're a small, fairly uniform, very rich, well-educated (to a degree - pun intended), technological advanced population. The marked might be small, but it's still a nice little marked.
Do you honestly see Apple pull out of a similar marked, let say New Your city, just because an unresolved quarrel with the local government...?
