They do build in obsolescence into the ipod as you can't replace the battery (easily). It does become a disposable item, although a pricey one at that. I do love the ipod (even though I don't own one) but this puts me off to the point where I just can't go through with actually buying one. My experience with rechargeable batteries in mobile phones and lap top isn't good.
My first gen 5GB iPod is still going strong after 5 years.
Also, even if the battery went totally dead, why would you throw a perfectly good iPod away? I use mine as a portable hard drive and in the car with an FM transmitter (connected to the lighter outlet to power the iPod) to listen to podcasts and music. Neither requires the battery for either of these functions. If you jog or bike or listen to your iPod while travelling and don't have access to power then replacing the battery is problematic but not impossible. In fact the local Microcenter here in Denver sells iPod battery replacements for less than $100 and will install them if you don't want to.

Haha, you're funny. I'm no fan of the Xbox, but you've got to be kidding if you think Nintendo is ever really going to kill Sony/MS. Nintendo may have sold the most consoles, but most main virtually unused, cos the Wii is woefully under-powered, propped up by the same old kiddy franchises and once you get past the new gimmicks gets boring fast.
I hardly know anyone with a Wii, that still uses it. The same will happen to the 3DS.
Nothing beats the XBox-Live ecosystem from what I read. Kudos for MSFT investing in it for a decade until it became profitable.

Unless you've purchased / converted music in Apple lossless format it IS way better quality. Im making the comparison of my situation listening to FLAC vs the masses who purchase mp3s on iTunes. You could rip your music in Apple Lossless for sure, but then your hooked into iTunes, cant play on WMP or most other mp3s other than iPods. Like with a lot of stuff iTunes related, if you go that route, your stuck. Even the all inclusive Sonos S5 sounds better than the best iPod dock on the market (Bose 10 / Zeppelin whichever grabs your boat the most).
- It may not be better quality, but it IS "way more expensive". AppleTV2 costs $99 (same price as an Airport Express which is "audio only" like Sonos). Sonos OTOH costs $349 for a basic receiver which then still requires to either be connected directly to a router (wired) OR you have to pay ANOTHER $99 for a "bridge" to send a separate wireless signal off your router just for Sonos devices (waste of bandwidth and clutters the band with more wireless signals instead of just using your existing wireless router, which most people already have (how many used a wired only router and if you did you cannot use the Sonos wireless for anything else). So already you are at LEAST $450 in the hole for a single room with Sonos and you have ONLY AUDIO capability.
Sonos isnt cheap for sure, but that is why I said people who have no shortage of money at the start of my thread. Some people have massive Mac systems, those people shouldn't skimp when it comes to music, if they like music, or video for that matter.
One of the big features of Sonos which you obviously arent aware of is that Sonos DOESNT hog your bandwidth. It uses its own Mesh network which works independantly of your home wireless network, hence no bandwidth constraints, which is why you can have up to 32 Sonos units all working AT THE SAME TIME on the same or different sources whilst not affecting the bandwidth capability of your home network. Try using even 2 AppleTV2s at the same time and see how much of your bandwidth is left.
Also, if you live in a large house, or one with thick walls, or you want to listen outside, because Sonos recreates its own Mesh network each time it hits a Sonos unit strength signal on the opposite side of the house to the router is still very high, each Zone Player acts like a new Sonos signal source.
Yup its expensive but I bought my first Sonos bit of kit in 2006. Since then ive added 3 more units, 2 of which were new redesigned units released a couple of years ago. Ive also added a second controller when they moved to touchscreen 2 years ago. And you know what? It all works seamlessly with each other. Old hardware, new hardware, built up over time. New features added over time (for free) seamlessly updated into even the oldest bit of hardware with a firmware update, they even added full Touch, iPhone and iPad control options so I could use any of them to control the audio around the house. Can you integrate AppleTV2 with 1? Can you honestly say in 5 years time your money spent will still work with the rest of your AppleTV system as they upgrade and add new features? When 3 year old sounddocks wont even charge new ipods I would hazard a guess...no.

And then there's the matter of Popcorn Hour's crappy interface versus Apple's polished one. XBMC makes Popcorn Hour look bad as well. Bugs or popcorn? :confused:
Cost seems to be the big issue with you, so I wonder if you own a mac mini as opposed to 3 macbook pros, an imac, apple tv2 etc etc as many posters here have? If so, Sonos etc wont be for you. I have a Dual Core 2.0 G5 and a 20 inch monitor. I'm considering selling just the G5 and Getting a Low End Mac Pro. Or selling both and getting the iMac. I know that MacPro is better, but the price compared to what you get with the iMac is just too good. So torn.:rolleyes:
But also looking at My 20 inch ACD right now, I can't help but think how F*#king huge that iMac must be. If they made an all black one thouth it would be over. I wish they made black ACD's and MacPro's too now that i think bout it.

There is nothing unusual with this move, I dont know why it keeps coming up. In fact, its strategic on Creative's part to include it in the settlement. They make good headphones and speakers, and if affixing a 'Made for iPod' tag on them increases revenue, they have nothing to lose. Total profit

Benchmarks look good...real good for a laptop chip! I wonder how the laptops will fare!
Loving the MacPro, and just like you guys waiting for some of the software to be seriously optimized for more than 2 cores. I've seen ~289% in spurts but not more from an app while encoding some video (I think the 289% was Handbrake). FCP seems to keep itself under 2 cores.

Here in Sweden, the Police says that their goal is to increase safety, not catch people. I'd rather have a drunk driver stay at home because of an app warning of a checkpoint than get in the car and get caught.

i wouldnt be suprised, apple is heading for the same thing they did with mac vs pc battle. they are 1 company, that means they can be VERY succesfull with introducing new products but in the end they cant keep up when the other companys throw in their overdrive. just watch not with duelcore android phones. coming halv a year before "iphone 5" if thats even gonne get released. android or wp7 is going to be the dominant mobile operating system withing a few years cause they arent closed systems.

They do build in obsolescence into the ipod as you can't replace the battery (easily). It does become a disposable item, although a pricey one at that. I do love the ipod (even though I don't own one) but this puts me off to the point where I just can't go through with actually buying one. My experience with rechargeable batteries in mobile phones and lap top isn't good.
Meh, don't worry about the batteries. Sure, some people have problems, but my 3G ipod is still doing surprisingly well! It may have lost a little bit of charge since I bought it but it still lasts at least 7 hours. Maybe I'm just lucky. Or maybe it knows it needs to behave before the sweet widescreen video ipod comes out. Or else. :D

Apple is in a slow fall...
I love Mac's, and will always own one. However, the Intel Mac's are buggy as hell. (Still Not Compareable to Windows) The iPod's are not as good as the PSP, except for the large hard drive (and the ease of iTunes).

Only poorly designed backup systems have this problem - the majority of systems around can make a consistent point-in-time backup of a live system.

I'd say a refresh of the Mac Mini and/or iMac might happen. Why would they call both of the existing models 'early 2006' (esp. the mini) in this page.

I bet the future dedicated display will be Thunderbolt driven only. It would reduce the number of wires from 3 to 2. It would be nice if power can be drawn from the monitor to power the laptop and just dock it with a single wire.
The monitor would still have USB ports just not feed from the USB port on the Mac.

So the theory they seem to be positing here is that most of the former Symbian users are going to become Windows Mobile users. If you look at the market share figures they show Windows climbing to the 20.9% share that Symbian currently has and Symbian largely ceasing to exist.
The reality is that the OS of phones is becoming the key differentiator. You decide iPhone, Android, or Windows, and then from there you decide the specific hardware you want to run. Nobody is going to be looking for a Nokia phone specifically and then just taking whatever OS it runs.
So if you assume that Android, iOS and Windows are all equal competitors, then figure, at most, Windows is going to take 1/3rd of the market from former Symbian users. Those users will be looking at three OS's that are all completely different from Symbian, so there's no reason to believe they'd have any particular loyalty to the Windows mobile OS because of former Symbian use on a Nokia phone.
They seem to predict that, instead, about 75% of the Symbian users go to Windows mobile. I find that highly unlikely.
