I hate to labour the point, but the Apple TV just got a price drop of $70 from $299 to $229, yet the UK price is still �199! Or - to put it another way and point out the pricing discrepancy - twice the price of the US version!
Couple this with the fact that you can't use the new movie rental features over here until "later this year", I can't see anyone buying an Apple TV in the UK for some time.

So I just watched a bit of the Bill Gates keynote at CES. It was streaming live at 500k with no problems. Is this because there isn't as many people watching it? Or do they have more resources available to get the stream out there?
BTW, I had to laugh when they demoed FMV used as a wallpaper in Vista, and the crowd ooohed and awwed and clapped. :)

We've been sent the OS and while we haven't loaded it on our iPhone just yet, here is what we have been told it will address:

I love reading this, suddenly half of the forum is a network specialist and knows what Apple will and will not do. Of course you can't forget the Verizon's network will fail just because all you specialists say so. Oh and the LTE network is only available in limited areas...gotta start somewhere...

I think you're missing the point that it was Apple, not Jaymes, who invoked 1984 first. Now, if you want to claim that forcing developers who want to be eligible for one of the most prestigious awards to post their apps to the Mac App store is not Orwellian, then you have every right to say such. I, and I am sure many other application developers, will disagree with you.
The Mac App store clearly demonstrates Apple's intent to drive the Mac towards as closed of a system as possible, not just for the OS, but for software as well (sort of like the iPad).
Let's also not forget that the Mac App store work great in a consumer world, not such a great idea in the enterprise and non-profit worlds where licenses tend to be owned by the employer. With the Mac App store, apps are owned by the individual. It makes business sense for Apple but not for the organization who will be purchasing.

It was a good message until they stated "Before you pick a phone, pick a network." That would be valid in an iPhone-less world. They would still be selling us phones based on a spinning CGI rendering of a phone's outer shell. "Look! A plastic candy bar! You like candy, don't you? Then you'll love our rectangular phone! My guess is we wouldn't have heard anything of the sort.
Chances are, the presenters all thought they had come kind of HW failure/ power failure up until the point Gizmodo posted their footage.

Squarely wrong. Even "The Inquirer" has talked about the vastly superior multitasking AND SMP features of OS X Leopard, as compared to what Vista seems to offer. Damn, even today any version of Windows crawls far behind OS X in that (XP Home didn't even have SMP support in the first place).
Second: the fact that IDF didn't have any "octo" machines derives from the simple and obvious assessment that Apple does NOT have any "octo" machines. Anything else would be just illegal.
And the lack of any OS X-running "quad" machines is not surprising either, given the usual (and) historical focus of the IDF; besides, it's an easy fallacy to assert that the non-existence of machines "running OS X" in quad configurations at a certain event means a lack of capacity by OS X to do so. This statement has no basis whatsoever.

I've seen it implemented in other forums, or just allow a thank you button type of thing, no negative option allowed please.
People have the cojones to neg you anonymously, but if their name was attached to the negative rep/karma, whatever you wish to call it, it would be a vastly different story.
Otherwise I'm for the removal of this seemingly annoying feature, faceless jerks can team up to negative rep your posts, and before you know it its war to neg' each other.

Right, there are only billions of people who can watch DVD's on computers of their choice now because of his efforts who couldn't before, spawning all kinds of video editing, DVR, and high-quality conversion systems that couldn't have existed without his work.

And you honestly think that there are tons of people using Open Source just because we do? No, the masses are content to use Windows Media in all its crappiness to play all their DVDs. We, my friend, are few and far between.

I sure as hell wouldnt move back to Windows for my everyday machine. I would move back to my Commodore 64 before that. :)
I wouldn't necessarily move to Windows for my everyday machine. Linux isn't too bad these days except for the lack of commercial software. It may end up being the OS of choice some day simply out of pure distaste for closed systems.

How many more will bother after Apple refuses to carry their software on the App store for various reasons? (e.g. it competes with something made by Apple; they don't like the adult theme; it's not politically correct enough, etc. etc.)
This will happen eventually, but not just with Apple. All commercial OS's will go "closed". But not in 2-3 years, more like 10-15 or so. Your only chance for an open OS will be stuff like Linux then.
Anyway, I've already said too much. :)

I don't like Windows, but I wouldn't like the closed/app store only system on OSX proper either. Seeing as that it doesn't have any place for the antenna (like the black area towards the top of the 3G iPad), i'm very skeptical with this picture.
I agree to be skeptical, but the antenna could have access through the front of the iphone. It does not necessarily have to be through the back shell.

I do not think this is a bad move. I mean, Apple seems to believe (and so do I) that App Store will eventually be the best way to distribute apps for developers and to buy/get them for consumers. All they need to do now is get it up to speed. So they force developers to submit their apps to the App Store.
About "App Store only apps on Mac OS X", hmm.. I don't think Apple will make the same mistake twice. They once fell back because of lack of software for their system. They will be forced to have App Store rules flexible enough so that users can easily find all sufficient apps there. If they can't install them, they will switch platforms. If they do, Apple loses.
Either way, the user kind of wins so I wouldn't worry too much about it ;)

Three new toys to own (MacBook Air, :apple:tv 2, and Time Capsule) plus an update for my existing toy - iPhone.

Now hopefully an MBP refresh will happen next Tuesday.
